Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Peter Szijjarto said that the existence of the Western Balkans is important for the European Union (EU) and that the countries in the region should not wait for many years for membership.

Szijjarto held a press conference with Milorad Dodik, President of the Republika Srpska (RS), one of the country’s two entities, in Banjaluka, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Pointing out the importance of peace and stability in the Western Balkans, Szijjarto said, “We have enough problems on our eastern borders. We do not want similar problems on this side.” he said.

Szijjarto stated that the existence of the Western Balkans is important for the EU and said, “Because we need dynamism and new energy from this region. At this point, we do not find it appropriate for the countries in the region to wait for an average of 14 years in the EU membership process. We urge the EU to avoid these steps that may lead to a complete collapse in its expansion policy.” We invite you.” he said.

Dodik also noted that Bosnia and Herzegovina wants to move forward determinedly towards EU membership.

Szijjarto also met with Zeljka Cvijanovic, Serbian Member of the Presidential Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
