“Today at 15:50 the coast guard took control of a vessel with an unclear flag status, which is suspected to be a stateless vessel,” Swedish authorities said.
Although the Caffa sailed under the Guinean flag, the Coast Guard considers it a stateless ship based on national and international legislation. The Swedish police added that the ship is suspected of sailing under a false flag.
According to the ship tracking service Marine Traffic, the Caffa is a 96 meter cargo ship.
The Coast Guard said it has opened a preliminary investigation into a possible violation of maritime law due to the ship’s unseaworthiness. “The Coast Guard has personnel on board to gather information on the condition of the vessel and crew and to conduct searches and interrogations,” the authorities added.
