Christmas Day 2024
On Christmas Day, you can shop in most stores until noon. The Act on the time of sale stipulates that shops may have open until 12:00 on Christmas Day.
However, the decision on operation is up to individual companies and owners. Therefore, if someone is going to look for last-minute gifts on December 24, or buy ingredients for Christmas dinner, it is a good idea to check the opening hours of the given store, for example on the website.
The first and second Christmas holidays
December 25Boží hod, is the first Christmas holiday, the second Christmas holiday December 26 we remember Saint Stephen. Both of these holidays are already fully covered by the law – shops are closed all day on these days. So people have to get all their Christmas shopping ahead of time even for both holidays.
If you still need to shop during the Christmas holidays, you can try your luck in a store with an area of less than 200 square meters, which is not covered by the law, typically convenience stores or gas stations. But not for those shops that are located in the premises of the shopping center – all shops and stores located in shopping centers must be closed, regardless of the size of the sales area.
Right after Christmas (from 27 to 30 December), retail chains should operate according to normal business hours.
New Year’s Eve and New Year
According to the calendar, New Year’s Eve is a normal working day, so the law does not regulate the opening hours of shops on December 31, but the sellers themselves often shorten them. Therefore, if you plan to buy New Year’s Eve treats on this day, it is better to find out about the opening hours of shops in your area on the website or directly at the store.
New year according to the calendar, it is a public holiday (Day of the Restoration of the Independent Czech State), on which shops with an area of more than 200 square meters must by law closed. Again, you can only buy in some smaller stores or convenience stores.
