Serious accident in Belgrade, the tram collides with a shop, dozens injured

A serious tram accident was recorded this morning (May 25) in Belgrade, where a tram number 5 derailed and collided with a building near the intersection of Cara Dušana and Knićaninova streets.

According to the announcement of the GSP Belgrade City Transport Company, the KT4 tram hit a nearby building, injuring several passengers and the driver.

The authorities inform that most of the injured have received minor injuries, while two passengers have suffered serious physical injuries, mainly fractures in the limbs.

According to preliminary information, it is suspected that one of the causes of the accident may have been the human factor, specifically the inappropriate speed of the tram while crossing the crossing, while the technical condition of the track infrastructure is also being verified.

Several emergency teams intervened at the scene, which transported the injured to hospital centers. According to the Emergency Service, 11 people were sent to the Emergency Center, while two children were transported to the Children’s Hospital on Tiršova street.

Eyewitnesses said that the tram was supposed to go straight on Cara Dušana Street, but for reasons that are still unclear, it changed direction and ended up crashing into a shop window at the corner of Knićaninova Street.

A large number of police officers are at the scene and are investigating the circumstances of the accident, while the authorities are expected to make public other details after the completion of preliminary investigations.
