The seventh day of anti -government protests in Serbia has been accompanied by strong complaints between protesters and law enforcement.
Following the escalation of acts of protesters in stone jumps towards Serbian progressive party offices, law enforcement forces intervened with tear gas for the distribution of protesters.
From his party’s damaged offices, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic condemned the act of prostrators while guaranteeing that he would liberate the country from terror and evil.
He also called on the authorities to act to put the authors accountable.
Vucic reiterated that he believes that there is an effort behind the protests a “color revolution”, according to him, organized and funded from abroad. He stressed that the Russian Foreign Ministry shares the same assessment.
“We will liberate the country from this terror and evil. Authorities will act” more, faster and more strongly, without asking for permission from anyone, “ he said.
Supporters of the government gathered outside the SNS building, where they cheered in support of the president.
The events come in the wake of civic anger after the tragic collapse of a concrete tent at Novi Sad’s railway station on November 1, 2024, where 16 people were killed. Protesters demand responsibility and transparency from the authorities to manage the event and its consequences.
In Belgrade, protesters gathered in two main points: in the new Belgrade and near the Vuku monument in the city center. One group joined citizens of Zemun municipality and marched towards the Branko Bridge, linking the new Belgrade with the old part of the city, then returning to Zemun and ending the protest.
Similar protests have been held in other cities of Serbia, while tensions between citizens and the government are expected to continue in the coming days.
