Only five Hungarian parties and movements will field a national candidate

In addition to the two strongest parties, the national candidate will also be fielded by the recessive Party of the Two-Tailed Dog, the nationalist Hnúti Naše Vlast and the left-wing Democratic Coalition of Klára Dobrevová, the ex-wife of former Socialist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsánya.

For example, the Jobbik movement failed to field a national candidate, and some parties voluntarily withdrew from the elections. The index.hu website reminds that in the 2022 elections, six political parties and movements fielded a national candidate, and in 2018 even 23 political parties and movements, but different rules applied to the registration of parties at that time.

Last year, the Momentum movement announced its withdrawal from the elections, and several smaller parties followed suit this year. The biggest surprise was the withdrawal from this year’s elections of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP), which was once the strongest governing party in Hungary.

A survey by the Publicus agency predicts a record 84 percent turnout in the elections. This survey confirmed 47 percent support for the Tisza party among decided voters and 35 percent support among all voters. Fidesz would get 39 percent of the votes among decided voters and 30 percent among all voters.

According to the Závecz agency, the current number of voters of Magyar’s party in a country of roughly ten million has exceeded three million. The electoral camp of Orbán’s Fidesz reaches 2.5 million.

However, Hungary has a specific system of elections, the outcome of which can ultimately be decided by single-mandate constituencies. In them, up to 106 seats in the 199-member parliament are divided.
