The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has dissolved the Assembly of Kosovo after the political parties failed to find a consensus for the election of the new president within the legal deadline, leading the country to new elections.
In a press conference, Osmani stated that the decision came after the deputies failed to fulfill their constitutional obligations. According to her, the situation was avoidable, but the political representatives failed to put the interest of the state above the party interests.
She announced that, in accordance with the Constitution of Kosovo, she issued the decree for the dissolution of the Assembly and for the announcement of new elections, after consultations with the political parties.
“I am here in front of you, because last night the people’s representatives decided to send the country to new elections. This situation was completely avoidable, it is a great misfortune for this country that they do not choose the interest of the Republic of Kosovo. Therefore, today in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo, I issued the decree for the dissolution of the Assembly, and through this decree I am fulfilling the constitutional obligation which is clearly defined. I issued a decree for the dissolution of the Assembly, the deputies decide to do not perform their constitutional duties. I have decided to announce new elections after consultations with political parties”, said Osmani in a press conference.
A day ago, the session of the Assembly of Kosovo for the election of the new president failed to take place due to the lack of quorum. The number of deputies present in the hall was not sufficient to continue the process, leaving the country without an institutional solution.
In the absence of proposals from other parliamentary groups, the Vetëvendosje Movement had proposed the candidates Glauk Konjufca and Fatmire Mulhaxha-Kollçaku, but the vote did not take place due to the lack of quorum.
Meanwhile, the Vetëvendosje Movement has warned that it will turn to the Constitutional Court of Kosovo to request an interpretation regarding the created political situation.
