Students from the University of Tirana and the University of Pristina gathered this Monday in “Skënderbej” square in Tirana, in a solidarity rally for the protection of the linguistic rights of Albanian students in North Macedonia. The reason for this reaction was the latter’s request for permission to conduct academic exams in the Albanian language.
With the motto “Albania is with Skopje”, the protesters started a march towards the North Macedonian embassy in Tirana. The participants carried national flags and banners with the inscription “We are together”, while the national anthem was sung at the start of the rally.
The organizers specified that this organization has a pure national and academic character, rejecting any tendency for electoral or party use.
The gathering brought together young people from Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia, who articulated the need to respect agreements on the use of minority languages in higher education institutions.
“We do not ask for privileges, but equality and respect for our language. The Albanian language is our identity and the legacy of the generations”declared a student from North Macedonia.
The students’ requests are expected to be officially forwarded to the relevant authorities in Skopje.
