Two days from the end of the constitutional deadline for the election of the new president, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti is intensifying talks with political parties. After the second meeting with the head of the PDK, Bedri Hamza, the head of the Vetëvendosje Movement today sits again at the table with the head of the LDK, Lumir Abdixhiku.
The day before at the meeting of the General Council of his party, Kurti mentioned the name of Murat Jashari for president, as a right solution at the right time, but the latter announced last week that he is not interested in the position of the head of state.
During the meeting on Saturday, Hamza said that he proposed to Kurti that the candidate for president be proposed by the Democratic Party of Kosovo. In response to this offer, the Prime Minister said that if the parties want each to have its own candidate, then such a proposal will also come from the Vetëvendosje Movement.
“If we do not manage to find a unifying figure that ensures the support of at least 80 deputies, then one of the remaining options is for each subject to propose its own party candidate and all submit to the competition before the Assembly, this is also foreseen by the Constitution…. if the subjects agree that this should be the path, that is, the open competition where each subject has the candidate for president, then we also agree with this approach and the LVV will have its candidate for president. As the president, I am doing my best to overcome this process and the country does not go to new elections”, said Kurti.
The new president of Kosovo must be elected by March 4, as the current president Vjosa Osmani’s term ends on April 4. If the parties do not reach a consensus, the country must go to early elections.
