The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has stated that Bekim Sejdiu remains the candidate of the Vetëvendosje Movement for president, despite his withdrawal from the race on September 14.
In a press conference, Kurti said that the LVV does not have another candidate and that the political agreement reached with the Democratic League of Kosovo must be respected.
“As for the candidate, we have the candidate. The candidate is Professor Bekim Sejdiu from the agreement”, Kurti said.
Kurti said that Sejdi’s withdrawal was related to the non-implementation of the political agreement and repeated that the LVV has no alternative name for the post of president.
Meanwhile, Kurti called for new meetings with the leaders of the opposition, saying that he is in communication with the chairman of the PDK, Bedri Hamza, and the chairman of the LDK, Lumir Abdixhiku.
“It is necessary to have new meetings”, said Kurti, without announcing a concrete date for the next meeting.
He expressed optimism that an agreement can be reached, referring to the recent cooperation in the Assembly for the statement regarding the judicial process in The Hague against the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army.
LVV and LDK proposed Sejdi as a joint candidate on August 31. However, six LDK deputies opposed his candidacy, while Sejdiu announced on September 14 his withdrawal from the race, citing the lack of necessary parliamentary support and political clashes.
According to the decision of the Constitutional Court, the 60-day period for the election of the president started on August 8 and ends on October 6.
If the Assembly fails to elect the president within this deadline, Kosovo may go to new parliamentary elections.
