The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has asked the political parties to find a solution for the election of the president, assessing that the country should not once again be involved in an election process.
A day after the constitution of the Assembly and the election of the new government, Kurti said that the main institutions are already functional and that the election of the president remains the last step to conclude the institutional process.
Kurti emphasized that the new institutions face a series of tasks and challenges that require political cooperation.
“Ahead of us we have a lot of work and projects, challenges and problems, and of course we will only succeed together. Our common governance is work for the citizen and protection for the state. Our government is a service for the public, not a privilege for the minority,” he said.
Referring to the past political crisis, the Prime Minister said that Kosovo has gone through two pairs of elections within a relatively short period, which, according to him, have been costly and have not produced a major change in the political scene.
Kurti emphasized that there is currently a political agreement between the Vetëvendosje Movement and the Democratic League of Kosovo for the presidential candidate, while the challenge remains securing the necessary number of votes in the Assembly.
“We are so close to the solution for the president that it would be unforgivable to go to the elections again to come back to the same point,” declared Kurti.
He called on MPs and political leaders to put aside their differences and work for an agreement that would enable Kosovo to elect a president.
According to him, another election process would not necessarily bring changes in the political composition of the country and would be detrimental to the public interest.
“As the prime minister of the Republic of Kosovo, but also as the head of the Vetëvendosje Movement, the largest political entity in the country and in the Parliament, I call on the political leaders, my colleagues, deputies, let’s resolve the issue of the president, give our country the institution in accordance with the citizens’ will and let’s move forward together as it belongs to our Republic and as our citizens expect. I am convinced that even an unnecessary election process not only it will not bring anything new in terms of the political mosaic in the country, but ultimately it would be irresponsibility towards the public interest and great political recklessness”, said Kurti.
