Increase in fuel prices – Prime Minister Mitsotakis announces a 300 million euro package with relief measures

In the conditions of a significant increase in fuel prices, the Greek government has announced a package of relief measures worth 300 million euros, which aims to support the citizens and the country’s economy in the face of the consequences of the energy crisis caused by the tensions in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in a televised message, stated that Greece is at the forefront of efforts for a unified European response, but until then it will act unilaterally at the national level.

He emphasized that the new measures will be implemented during the months of April and May, including almost the entire population.

Mitsotakis underlined that support is necessary for families and businesses, as fuel prices directly affect production costs, product price increases and citizens’ daily lives.

He added that the funds for this package will be provided from the state budget and from the taxation of the profits of online gaming operators.

The main decisions of the Greek government:

Diesel subsidy for vehicles: 16 cents/liter in the distribution network, which for the consumer translates into a reduction of 20 cents/liter with VAT.

Digital Fuel Card: use at gas stations, public transport and taxis; average support 36 cents/litre. For average monthly consumption of 70 liters, the benefit is 50 euros every two months on the mainland and 60 euros on the islands.

Subsidy for farmers: 15% of the cost of chemical fertilizers to ease their financial burden.

Compensation for ferry companies: Provided that they offer discounts on travel tickets so that prices remain at last year’s levels.
