“During the inspection, a depression approximately five centimeters deep was found near Runway 4/22,” LaGuardia Airport reported, according to Fox News.
The airport claims that “the depression does not pose an immediate security risk”. “Workers are already on site working on stabilization,” it said.
Arrivals at LaGuardia are currently delayed by an average of 48 minutes. The station has reported 174 delays so far.
Runway 4/22 is expected to remain closed until the evening CET as repair crews, in addition to reconstruction, also work on additional tests of the subsoil and identification of the cause of the problem.
In May for the first time
A similar situation occurred already on May 20. That’s when the first sinkhole was found at runway 4/22 during a routine inspection. Flight cancellations and delays then complicated the travel of thousands of Americans who were returning to their hometowns for Memorial Day. This important federal holiday is celebrated in the US every last Monday in May to honor the memory of the men and women who have died while serving in the US Armed Forces. This year, this holiday fell on Monday, May 25.
LaGuardia is the smallest of the three commercial airports serving New York and its surroundings. The airport, which is located in Queens near Manhattan, mainly handles intra-American flights.
