Environment, Europe’s challenge for Serbia, polluted air and waste endanger health

Polluted air, waste in every corner and insufficient treatment of waste water remain some of the biggest environmental challenges in Serbia, while the process of integration into the European Union requires ever higher standards in this field.

Professor of Physical Chemistry, Svetlana Stanishic, says that the main culprits for poor air quality are heating with wood at home and old power plants.

Svetlana Stanišić, professor of chemistry said, “Energy efficiency is becoming a buzzword. Replacing windows and insulating buildings can save up to 60 percent of energy consumption.”

However, the challenges in Serbia remain great even for water pollution, as currently only about 15 to 20 percent of municipal wastewater is treated.

For this reason, state projects and investments with the support of the European Union are aimed at building wastewater treatment plants and improving the waste management system.
