According to the TASS agency, Lavrov “explained the basic causes of the conflict” to Danko during the Tuesday meeting in Ukraine, which Russia has been attacking militarily for the third year. The head of Russian diplomacy emphasized how counterproductive it is that the Western allies are “strengthening the Kiev regime with the supply of weapons”, which is an attitude that the Russian aggressor repeatedly spreads.
Danko has been visiting Russia together with other members of the government parties since Sunday.
In the previous days, Danko and Deputy Speaker of the Slovak Parliament Tibor Gašpar also met with other Russian representatives, for example with the head of the lower chamber of the Russian parliament Vyacheslav Volodin and the chairwoman of the upper chamber of the Russian parliament Valentina Matvijenko.

According to TASS, Matvijenková praised Slovakia’s sovereign policy during a meeting with Slovak politicians. “I believe that you, Mr. Danko and Mr. Gašpar, are among those who are ready for dialogue and constructive cooperation,” she added.
The MPs justify their visit to Russia mainly by the need to improve mutual relations between the two countries and talk about establishing business relations, but they also managed a cultural program when they saw a performance of The Nutcracker at the Moscow Theatre.
The trip to the country, which is facing EU sanctions for its aggressive war against Ukraine, including Slovakia, is conceived in a propaganda spirit. During the visit, Danko is active on social networks, where he publishes videos in which he defends cooperation with Russia. He hardly mentions the war, but he enthusiastically describes life there and notes with joy the cases when he comes across Western goods that appear in local shops despite Western sanctions.

At the same time, it does not always distinguish whether it is really an original or a Russian variant. “Here’s a McDonald’s,” he points to the sign Vkusno & točka (Tasty & point) in one of the videos, for example.
In December, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smér) also traveled to Moscow, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. There, according to his words, he dealt with the stoppage of the transfer of natural gas through Ukraine.
For their pro-Russian activities, Slovak politicians receive criticism on the international political scene and from part of the Slovak public. Last Friday, thousands of people took to the streets in several cities across the country to protest against Russia.
The Slovak opposition announced on Tuesday in response to the behavior of the deputies that it would propose a vote of no confidence in the cabinet of Prime Minister Robert Fico. This was stated by the head of the Progressive Slovakia (PS) movement, Michal Šimečka. The opposition does not have enough votes in the lower house to dismiss the government, but displeasure with the current course is already being heard from the government parties as well.
