The Opava River spilled into the Kateřinky housing estate in Opava. Firefighters go there on boats and help rescue people who haven’t left yet, said city spokesman Roman Konečný.
According to him, the situation is serious, for example, at the gardening colony near the Military Raft. Water is now flowing through the city more than expected according to forecasts.
“The situation is worse than the forecasts indicated on Saturday. There is much more water,” he said. He added that the current flood has already surpassed the one from 1997. “As for the amount of water, definitely. We don’t know about the damage yet,” he said.
At 07:00, the third flood stage was still valid on the Opava river. The level reached a height of five meters. The normal state is around a meter.
“Water flows into the premises of the Kateřinky housing estate from two sources. Firefighters with boats are already on the scene. They help save residents,” Konečný said. He added that the city also had the main road connecting Ostrava and Opava closed in Komárov. “Water is flowing through the road,” he said. The municipal swimming pool is also flooded. The city also strengthened police patrols in areas where people were supposed to evacuate. “Now we have 48 police officers there. They also go around houses and ring the bell where, for example, there is light on the lower floor,” he said.
