Britain bans machetes and knives with blades longer than 20 centimeters

Although Britain is one of the safest countries in the world, knife crime has become the most common method of murder in England and Wales. The number of similar crimes here has been growing continuously since 2012. According to statistics, there were 244 fatal stabbings in the period ending in March 2023.

The attacks that happened recently in Britain caused fear among the population and people asked for . after the reign of action. Reducing knife crime is the main goal of the new Prime Minister and Labor leader Keir Starmer. He himself promised that he would do everything to reduce the number of attacks by half in the next ten years.

The law, which will come into effect on Tuesday, prohibits the possession or sale of Zombie type knives and machetes, the length of which exceeds 20 centimeters. Whether the new law will be effective remains to be seen. Machetes figured as a murder weapon in only 14 of the 244 previously mentioned cases.

Starmer wants to focus primarily on young people who, according to statistics, are the most frequent owners of similar weapons. He wants to start by making it more difficult to buy dangerous weapons on the Internet. “Too many knives are too readily available,” he said.

Hollywood star Idris Elba is also participating in the campaign, whose Elba Hope Foundation has become part of the fight against knife crimes. According to him, it is essential to focus on young people between the ages of 16 and 24. “We will not eradicate knife crime, we cannot and it is not even realistic. But we can solve the causes,” said Idris Elba.

Great Britain is still recovering from the July knife attack in Southport, after which three girls died and ten others were injured. Seventeen-year-old Axel Rudakubana, originally from Wales, was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
