The driver ran into pedestrians in the center of Via Emilia Street, which is the main thoroughfare crossing Modena.
The mayor of Modena, Massimo Mezzetti, said according to the agency ANSA, that the driver drove the car onto the sidewalk and also hit the cyclist. He broke both legs of one woman. Subsequently, he ran into the window of one of the local shops.

The driver was identified as a 31-year-old migrant from North Africa.

Witnesses described that when they saw the car, it started to accelerate. The driver fled the scene after the crime and several people chased him. One of the witnesses described that the man mumbled something and that it was not in Italian.
The Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that the attacker is a 31-year-old Italian citizen of Moroccan origin.
