In the show “Trialog”, moderated by journalist Alba Alishani, analyst Preç Zogaj commented on political developments in Kosovo and how the institutional crisis was resolved through the election of the country’s president.
According to Zogaj, Kosovo was facing a very difficult political situation, where there was a real risk that the country would go to early elections for the fifth time.
He described the election of the president as a compromise reached at the last moment, which avoided a new political and institutional crisis.
“The situation was quite pessimistic, as Kosovo was in danger of going to early elections for the fifth time. The election of the president was a last-minute compromise, but a necessary compromise to get out of the political deadlock“, said Zogaj.
The analyst emphasized that this decision is a sign of maturity from the Kosovar political elite, which for months had been faced with a crisis that called into question the state-forming capacity of the country’s institutions.
“Her choice is a compromise, but above all it is an act of maturity and a positive act of Kosovo’s political elite. During several months, the political crisis was questioning, in some way, the state-forming capacity of Kosovo itself“, he declared.
Zogaj underlined that the failure to elect the president was sending a negative message both inside the country and abroad, creating the impression of a political system incapable of solving basic institutional issues.
“It was very bad news that Kosovo was not able to elect the President and therefore went from election to election. Even the formation of the government was accomplished with great difficulty“, he said.
At the end of his analysis, Zogaj assessed that overcoming this situation constitutes a positive development for the political stability of Kosovo.
“The passing of this situation is a positive thing and the crisis was resolved. Another element to mention is the fact that this is the third female president at the head of the state of Kosovo, an important indicator of the representation of women in the highest institutions of the country“, concluded Zogaj.
