The meeting between Prime Minister Albin Kurti and the chairman of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), Bedri Hamza, who was accompanied by MP Rrahman Rama in the Government building, ended without reaching any agreement.
The discussions between the two leaders focused mainly on two key points of the current political situation: the changes in the Law on Specialized Chambers related to the process in The Hague and the process of electing the new president of the country.
PDK’s position, the law first, then the president
After the end of the meeting, the chairman of PDK, Bedri Hamza, confirmed to the journalists that the parties have not yet reached an agreement, but left the door open for further dialogue.
“There is no agreement. So far there is no agreement on the topics we discussed. It is possible that we will have meetings in the following days as well,” said Hamza.
He emphasized that for the party he leads, the approval of the law related to the process of the Special Court in The Hague is a primary necessity, before it can be constructively discussed about the issue of the head of state.
“We need the law to be processed and approved in the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo. For the Democratic Party of Kosovo, you know, it is necessary, it is necessary to approve the law. Then, we are open to discuss the president, in order to give the country a president,” he added.
Time pressure and the crucial weekend
For his part, Prime Minister Albin Kurti had warned of the importance of these contacts during the day, stressing that the time to find a consensus is limited.
“We have started communications and, of course, this weekend is crucial to have an agreement, so that next week we have the president,” Kurti stated.
With the approach of the constitutional deadlines for the election of the president and with the clear demands of the opposition regarding the developments around the Specialized Chambers, the following days are expected to be decisive for the fate of this political stalemate.
