The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has announced that during his stay in New York, he met with American Congressman George Latimer, with whom he discussed the developments in Kosovo, cooperation with the United States of America and security issues in the region. Through a post on Facebook, Kurti clarified that the focus of the meeting was economic development, progress in the field of security and the strengthening of Kosovo’s international position.
“We discussed economic development, progress in security, strengthening our international position and the strong partnership between Kosovo and the United States of America, including cooperation in defense and development,” Kurti wrote.
Also, during the talks, the pair also focused on the issue of the American military presence in Kosovo, where Prime Minister Kurti underlined the government’s position that Camp Bondsteel be transformed into a permanent American military base.
“I reiterated our position that Camp ‘Bondsteel’ be transformed into a permanent American military base, for the purpose of long-term peace, stability and security in the region,” declared Kurti. The meeting also discussed the issue of violently disappeared persons during the last war in Kosovo, including the mass graves and the need for access to Serbia’s archival documentation.
“We talked about the persons forcibly disappeared during the last war, the mass cemeteries, the importance of declassifying the documentation and opening the archives from Serbia, as well as the need for justice for the crimes committed,” Kurti said.
