Greece has approved one of the largest armament programs in recent years, with a value of up to 3.5 billion euros. Athens will buy from Israel the advanced air defense system “Achilles Shield”, designed to withstand ballistic missiles, airstrikes and drones. The Greek authorities announce that the system is expected to be fully operational within 35 months.
The package also includes the purchase of US and Israeli drones, three C-390 military transport aircraft and 10 British special operations mini-submarines. According to the Greek government, at least 25 percent of the new system will be produced by the domestic defense industry. The Minister of Defense, Nikos Dendias, declared that the country has entered a new era of security, with an integrated system that will cover the entire Greek territory.
He emphasized that the Greek defense industry will benefit from investments exceeding the value of 700 million euros. Meanwhile, Athens plans to invest around 28 billion euros by 2036 to modernize the armed forces.
The plan also includes the purchase of F-35 fighter jets from the United States. Greece continues to increase defense spending due to its rivalry with Turkey and strengthening strategic cooperation with Israel.
