The acting president of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, has commemorated the 16th anniversary of the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), describing it as one of the cornerstones of the international legitimacy of Kosovo’s citizenship.
In a public reaction, Haxhiu emphasized that the opinion of the ICJ, published on July 22, 2010, confirmed that the Declaration of Independence of Kosovo, announced on February 17, 2008, was not contrary to international law.
According to her, this assessment of the Court remains an important legal and political reference in affirming the international subjectivity of the Republic of Kosovo and in strengthening its position in the international arena.
On July 22, 2010, the ICJ in The Hague rejected the claims that the declaration of independence had violated the norms of international law, assessing that the adoption of the Declaration of Independence did not conflict with general international law.
The advisory opinion was given after Serbia’s request to the United Nations General Assembly, which had asked the Court for an assessment on the legality of Kosovo’s declaration of independence.
