The Kosovo Police has launched investigations into the criminal offense of “endangering the safety of civil aviation”, after a suspected incident where a person directed a green laser beam towards a civil aircraft in the village of Janjevë, in the municipality of Lipjan.
Janjeva is located not far from the “Adem Jashari” International Airport in Pristina and the area is included in the flight corridors of planes that land or take off from the airport. For this reason, any laser beam interference with aircraft is considered a serious risk to the safety of civil aviation.
According to the announcement of the Kosovo Police, the case was initiated on July 16, 2026, in coordination with the competent prosecutor, after the authorities received information that the incident occurred on July 13, around 9:50 p.m.
Investigations are ongoing, while the police have not yet provided other official details about the incident.
According to sources, the pilot of the aircraft was confronted with a green laser light, which is suspected to have been deliberately aimed at the aircraft during the flight.
Sources say that the laser beam is suspected to have been used by an as yet unidentified person.
“The aviation pilot reported an incident with a laser light on the aircraft. The vehicle was in motion when an individual used a green laser in its direction,” the source stated.
The use of lasers on aircraft can temporarily blind or distract pilots, especially during the critical phases of take-off and landing, so it is considered a serious criminal offense in many countries of the world.
The Kosovo Police is continuing the investigation to identify the suspect and fully clarify the circumstances of the case.
