Law enforcement authorities in Montenegro, in coordination with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), executed the arrest of an Iranian-Turkish citizen accused of serious cybercriminal activity. According to international news agencies, the suspect is wanted by American justice for computer attacks that are estimated to have caused a financial damage of about 3.4 billion dollars (approximately 3 billion euros).
The interdiction operation was carried out in the coastal city of Kotor and marks part of Washington’s expanding strategy to crack down on hacking structures operating on behalf of or for the benefit of Iran’s state interests.
Assault history and federal charges
The suspect, identified by Montenegrin police as AB, 39, faces a number of charges before a federal court in New York. The investigative file includes allegations of conspiracy to commit computer fraud, unauthorized infiltration of systems (hacking) and identity theft.
According to the data made public by the security structures, the activity of the detained person dates back to 2013. During this period, he is suspected of undertaking large-scale hacking campaigns against critical and educational infrastructure in the USA.
“AB conducted large-scale hacking attacks against US infrastructure, including more than 150 universities. The stolen data and access to compromised university accounts were used to benefit Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and other entities, including Iranian universities.”it is emphasized in the official communique from the Police of Montenegro.
Further proceedings and the geopolitical context
After the arrest in the tourist area, the suspect was transferred to the capital Podgorica. Judicial authorities there are expected to begin formal review of the official request submitted by the United States for his extradition to American territory.
This development comes at a time when intelligence and cyber security agencies in the US have raised the level of warnings of attacks coordinated by Tehran. According to recent intelligence reports, an increasing trend of Iranian state-sponsored hacking campaigns targeting public and scientific research institutions in the West has been observed in recent months of this year.
