The European Council has announced that at its next meeting in October 2026 it will hold a strategic discussion on enlargement and reforms, building on the new momentum created by the Granada Declaration. This decision was announced after the meeting held on June 18-19 in Brussels.
Europeanwesternbalkans announced that regarding the Western Balkans, the European Council welcomed the holding of the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Tivat, Montenegro, on 5 June 2026, which gave a new impetus to the enlargement process.
In its statement, the European Council stressed that the European Union will continue to work closely with the countries of the region and support their reform efforts on the way to membership.
He underlined the commitment to advance gradual integration between the EU and the Western Balkans during the enlargement process, in a merit-based and reversible manner.
“Recalling its previous conclusions, the European Council reiterates that the European Union will continue to work closely with the Western Balkans and support their reform efforts on their way to EU membership. The European Council remains committed to advancing the gradual integration between the European Union and the region during the enlargement process itself in a merit-based and reversible manner,” the press release said.
