“After a very difficult clean-up of the consequences of a tragic traffic accident, it was possible to partially restore traffic thanks to a change in traffic organization. It is currently in 1+1 mode, i.e. one lane for each direction of travel. Drive with maximum caution,” the police wrote before 4:30 p.m.
The accident happened shortly before half past five in the morning at the 11th kilometer. “The Hungarian truck was coming from Brno, at the point of the narrowing for unknown reasons it hit concrete barriers, skidded and stopped across the highway,” spokeswoman for South Moravian police officers Andrea Cinková told ČTK.
The oncoming Romanian truck rammed into the middle part of the tractor and both cars subsequently caught fire. Both drivers died in the accident.
“Both cars were on fire and two dead drivers were found inside the cabins, which the firemen had to extricate using the AKU rescue technique. The highway was completely closed for the duration of the intervention,” said Štěpán Komosný, spokesman for the South Moravian fire department. One of the trucks was transporting peas, the other was transporting mattresses.
Firefighters had to prevent further spread of the fire and protect the surroundings, the intervention was complicated by the fact that the accident occurred in a section where traffic is affected by bridge repair. “The fire was brought under control in the morning hours, followed by extinguishing, rescue of the victims and cleaning of the road,” the spokesman added. Six units of firefighters intervened on the spot until 10:00.
The highway was completely closed at the scene of the accident, the police diverted traffic at the exit in Chrlice to Břeclav and at Blučina in the direction of Brno.
