Harlem Désir, Representative on Freedom of the Media of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson due to concerns regarding the harsh criticism of and verbal attacks on the media by U.S. President Donald Trump, OSCE reported on Monday on their official website. In the letter, this organization asks of Trump to refrain from attacking the media, with a warning that these attacks will degrade the essential role of the media in democracy and will expose journalists to abuse.

The Representative on Freedom of the Media highlighted Trump’s statements at a rally in Arizona on 22 August during which

the U.S. president criticised the media accusing them of dishonesty, lying and making up stories.
“I urge the United States administration to refrain from delivering such attacks on the media”, stated Désir in the letter to Tillerson.

Désir said that the U.S. President’s statements are problematic and that they degrade the essential of the media in a democratic society. He also added that Trump’s statements are undermining the credibility of the media and that the ones in which he calls the media “enemy of the people” could subject journalists to violence and abuse.
