President of the German Federation of Journalists: If AFD and the other parties don`t want to have reporters from leading media in Germany at their conference, this has nothing to do with democracy.

Several  journalists who have been critical in their reporting about the German party Alternative for Germny (AFD), didn’t get accreditation to the ENF (Europe of the Nations and Freedom) conference in Koblenz which will be held on 21 January 2017,  the European Federation of Journalist (EFJ) reported. According to the EFJ, the conference will, among others, be attended by the representatives of the German party AFD.

Among those whose accreditations were denied are the journalists from newspapers Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung, ARD-Tagesschau, Handelsblatt and Spiegel.

Only the press conferences will be open to all journalists, but not the political conference itself.

The President of the German Federation of Journalists (DJV), Prof. Dr. Frank Überall for Fairpress commented on these events:

If the German party AFD and their

European partners wants to be seen as democratic, they have to accept democratic conventions. Therefore, they can`t do their conference without public. Journalists have to observe themselves, when they want to deliver credible reports. If AFD and the others parties don`t want to have reporters from leading media in Germany at their conference, this has nothing to do with democracy

Furthermore, the German Federation of Journalists called on the conference organisers to accredit interested journalists. They stressed that this situation shows that the AFD party has a problem accepting criticism and press freedom.

The EFJ warns that this approach violates the practical nature of accreditations based on the fact that  journalistic privileges are provided with a specific purpose – to ensure the public right to freedom of information.
